IT can make you gain weight, I put 50+ lbs on with it. Personally I'd suggest the Nuvaring if it's an option. I spent 3 months on it and LOVED It! The reason is Nuvaring is low dose, you won't normally put weight on with it, and it's easier than a pill and you don't have to remember it every day the same time.
Hey you and your girlfriend have nothing to worry about, antibiotics don't effect the Nuvaring like they do with "the pill" This is an article from a medical journal that can confirm this for you. :-D

When used correctly, the birth control ring (NuvaRing) is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Correct use of the NuvaRing involves putting it into your vagina and leaving it in for three weeks, then removing it for a week before replacing it and starting the cycle again. If you don’t put in your new NuvaRing on time or the NuvaRing is out of your vagina for more than 3 hours when you’re supposed to have it in, the effectiveness will decrease.
If you use it perfectly, the ring is 99% effective. But people aren’t perfect and it can be easy to make a mistake — so in reality the ring is about 91% effective. That means about 9 out of 100 ring users get pregnant each year. The better you are about putting the ring in your vagina on schedule, the better it will work.
