Can you drink beer while taking antibiotics?

  • Alcohol doesn’t make antibiotics less effective, but consuming alcohol — especially if you drink too much — might increase your chance of experiencing certain side effects. For some antibiotics, you should never consume alcohol while you take them.

Can you drink beer while on antibiotics? It's my friends going away party cause he's going to college in a different country, and I defo dont' want to go overboard maybe have a can or two, but I'm trying to not get my wisdom teeth gums re-infected and I've been taking anti-biotics for that.

Only some antibiotics are incompatible with alcohol. Many of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics are fine with *moderate* drinking. Heavy drinking may cause them to pass through the body too fast. An example of a common antibiotic that is OK with moderate drinking is Amoxycillin, one of the semi-synthetic penicillins.

Though moderate drinking is thought to be relatively safe with many antibiotics, most antibiotic medications are packaged with a warning to avoid alcohol during the course of treatment.

But NHS advice states that drinking alcohol in moderation is unlikely to cause problems if you're on the most common antibiotics. However, health experts say that it is "sensible" to avoid drinking alcohol when taking antibiotics of feeling unwell.

Drinking while you take this drug can increase these effects. If that does happen, it may be best to hold off on drinking alcohol until you have finished treatment.
